Plaza de Armas in Havana, Cuba, is among the places visited during the new PBS Newshour report.

It's been several years since I was in Cuba on assignment. So it was with great interest that I learned about PBS senior correspondent Ray Suarez and the PBS Newshour's Global Health Unit, who recently traveled to Havana, Cuba, to report on the health system, medical diplomacy and the move toward economic reforms. In a three-part series airing Dec. 20-22 (check local listings), Suarez explores Havana and the surrounding region to outline changes that have taken place in Cuba – particularly since the dissolution of its former financial patron, the Soviet Union.

You can watch an online-exclusive on the struggles of everyday life in Cuba. Ray Suarez also shares his experience as an American reporter – and as a baseball enthusiast. In a second video, Suarez talks with NewsHour Senior Correspondent Jeffrey Brown about the country’s changing economy, its booming medical research industry, and its health care system. Then read two Reporter’s Notebooks in which Ray Suarez describes getting reacquainted with – and later, lost in – Havana.

This promises to be an interesting series of reports about an always-fascinating destination.
